What is Postpartum Depression?

During the transformative journey into parenthood, it's important to recognize that mental health challenges can arise. Postpartum depression, as well as other perinatal mood disorders like postpartum anxiety, postpartum OCD, and postpartum bipolar disorder, affect many individuals during and after pregnancy. These conditions, known as Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs), encompass a range of emotional challenges that can begin during pregnancy or up to one year after giving birth. I’m here to provide the comforting support and professional expertise you need to navigate these experiences.

Do I have Postpartum Depression?

Differentiating between the normal adjustment period, often called the "baby blues," and postpartum depression or another PMAD is crucial. While the "baby blues" typically involve temporary mood swings, tearfulness, and mild anxiety that tend to subside within a couple of weeks, postpartum depression is more intense and enduring. Symptoms can include persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, irritability, worthlessness, disruptions in appetite and sleep patterns, and difficulty bonding with your baby. Some individuals may also experience scary or intrusive thoughts, as well as a loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed.
